A while ago I won an incentive at work. We all participated without actually knowing what is up for grabs. I am mighty glad I won. Hard work does pay off.
This little gem is hidden in plain sight on the Klapmuts road just off the N1 on your way to Stellenbosch/Paarl. Now, I have driven that road so many times I almost know all the corners, except for this one. Ha ha.
Its a very old farm house built in 1600’s. Parts have been restored as there was a fire, but most of the original buildings are still there and are being used as accommodation and a function venue. There are a few very old artefacts as well.
It is in the middle of the hustle and bustle of “city life” but far enough on it’s own to give you the quiet you need.
We spent the one night but was warmly welcomed by the staff, had afternoon tea with very yummy cookies and spent the afternoon exploring.
I absolutely love the feeling of the place and the decor is stunning.
Breakfast is served at one long table or outside on the stoep. The stoep overlooking the mountain and view of the farm. Waking up to that is priceless.
It would be lovely to return, but it is pricey. Be warned. You can have a look at their website here.
The only problem I had was actually making a booking. Everything needs to be done per email. No confirmation is done per telephone and it was a schlep to send the email and then follow up the whole time. Fair enough, I was push for time, but still . A telephone call confirmation would have been much better.
The Sunday morning was a time for new things. I have never been at the Route 44 market and everyone is always raving about it.
We spent the day there and I had a lot of fun. You have fresh flowers, arts and crafts and glorious food everywhere. I think what I like most is you do business at the stall with the stall owner. No carrying around your products and thinking about it. You can browse and go back and pay immediately or leave just there.
Just a few tips on that:
- A blanket if you fancy sitting on the grass
- They use Snapscan/Zapper, Cash and cards. There are ATM’s around the market but the expensive ones.
- TAKE LOTS OF MONEY – hahaha if you are a spender like me.
I will do this all over again. Just participate in another incentive – teehee
